Mr Koo, english teacher

An Interview with Mr KooReporter:

Reporter: Why do you want to be an English teacher?

Mr Koo: Students' poor English standard, due to whatever forms of social inequalities, has always been my motivation that drives me to be a teacher. The multiplicity of academic, aesthetic and social stratification, which I strongly believe, is the inevitable consequence of uneven distribution of social wealth, and thus parts of the social resources should be reallocated to those vulnerable, who suffer from the deprivation of the unrighteous and the rich. My mission and vision are, therefore, to reach as many students as I can, and to give out a helping hand to those in the stifling darkness of helplessness and over the unbreakable walls of exploitation.

Reporter: How can we learn better English?

Mr Koo: Understanding the nature of language is the key to learning better English. Language is, all in all, for communication, and not for assessment purposes. Assessment is only a tool. It can never be the end. Since language is for communication, and therefore language skills can only be acquired through interactions and negotiations of meanings. Mechanical drills and rote learning can provide learners with the keyhole to peek through the door to the world of communication. Moderate amount of drilling exercises is needed for preparing students to be ready for examinations, but students' learning motivation will be, in the long run, nipped in the bud if they become the only learning tool of the lessons.
